The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On The Other Side
The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I don’t think people totally comprehend what that means. I didn’t until I left mcaConnect and then came back.
Earlier this year I found a new job opportunity with another company and it paid more. This company had recently been experiencing growth and is a large, well-established Microsoft Dynamics partner. At the time I was excited to get the job and more money.
Within the first 60 days of being in my new job I had questions and concerns.
My customer assignments changed 3 different times with 3 different customers in my first month. It made me realize that mcaConnect has stronger relationships with our customers because we treat our customers fairly.
The implementation team I worked with wasn’t a cohesive unit with common delivery goals and objectives. Instead, some team members were immature and more worried about career objectives and individual recognition. At mcaConnect, every implementation delivery team member I’ve worked with all strive to deliver the product and service as a cohesive unit, each willing to step in to complete each other’s tasks. The last thing during a project they’re worried about is their own personal career objectives and individual recognition.
I met with my manager on a monthly basis but we never discussed where the company was going, what the financial objectives for the next year were, or where they were looking to grow the business. When I asked my manager these questions he told me that this kind of information was not shared at my level. I was with mcaConnect for 5 years before I left. I had been through management changes and a merger and while there were struggles and challenges there was never a lack of communication at any point in time.
The opportunity to come back to mcaConnect arose in the fall and I’ve been back for less than a month. I have no desire to even look for another opportunity. Since I’ve been “home”, I’ve come to realize a few things:
- mcaConnect has great transparency with their employees: management has always been honest with us about the state of the business.
- I missed the cohesiveness and support provided by management.
- The number 1 attribute that defines mcaConnect is that they care about people. It’s not just about making money. Yes we’re a business and we want to do well but they really care about people.
More money doesn’t mean anything without valuable direction, relationships and open communication. The grass isn’t greener on the other side.
